The recent softening of the U.S.-Cuba relations has rekindled interest in the Cuban economy. University of Nevada, Reno's Dr. Brad Schiller examines the dramatic decline in the Cuban economy since the 1959 Revolution. He cautions that the resurgence of the Cuban economy will be a slow and painful process, even if the United States lifts the embargo and Cuba permits free trade and foreign investment. Dr. Schiller has extensive experience in international development and has been a consultant to both U.S. and foreign governments on trade, as well as tax and investment policies. He has visited Cuba nine times in the last two years. He also is the co-author of "The Economy Today," a highly regarded textbook that is used at Palm Beach State College.
